Day 3 - Part 1

Page 1

Woke up hungover, hungry and thirsty. For a moment life feels normal, for once I feel exactly like I would have before everything went to hell. Then a call comes on the walkie-talkie beside my bed.

"Is anyone out there? I'm in sector 2/3, surrounded by zombies. Help, please."

I groan and pick up the walkie-talkie. "Alright, I'll come get you."

I get up, pop open the microwave and eat the noodles I find there - the microwave doesn't work anymore, I just keep my food in there for old times sake... sometimes I make a 'bing' noise before opening it. I digress.

After eating I head over to the bank. Well, we call it a bank, it's just a big warehouse on the outskirts of town. A gaunt figure watches me warily as I head out to it...

Jim 'the Hand' was caught stealing from us, we took his hand and his right to visit the bank as punishment. Now he just stares at us, mumbling about revenge. He looks ill, I think maybe he's infected. We'll soon find out.

The bank is full of stuff, most of it junk - rotting logs and scrap metal - but I find something interesting. In a wooden box marked 'Military Prototype - Devastator Battery Launcher'. I pick it up, shake it and something rattles. It's broken but this is where my engineering degree finally comes in useful, I find some of the other junk my fellow citizens dumped in the bank, a belt and a few nuts and bolts, and soon I've got the thing working! A victory, for once. Maybe I'll survive a few more days after all... unless Jim comes for me in the night... [contd...]
