...She missed being social, so long ago; she was in her summer dress, her son was helping her bake cookies while she walked back and forth around the TV listening to the news update about quarantine zones. Sprinkles fell on white icing like dust; she smiled at her son, holding the doorway with a creaking hard grip.

Knocking feet, banging fists, the breaking window, shot her up from bed, into her thick slippers, down the hall, turning on no lights and into her son’s room. She saw lights flicking on in other houses, the monsters wailed towards the signs of fresh life, screams followed.

The picket fences were grey, porches dark under dim desert stars, the car already packed with ten gallons of water, a few clothes, first aid kit and a small stash of dry and canned food; she was prepared. He was still asleep in his dinosaur pjs, his brown hair all messed up, nostrils flaring with his breath; all she needed to do was pick him up, grab the cars keys and drive as fast as she could in her blue pickup to somewhere.

The son ran through the dirt, the big shoes flopping, laces untied, to the workshop straight to one of the men, he was an older, short and grey in the eyes, but the small boy brought some light into his eyes.

The boy was the only child there in the camp, not many survived the trek through the desert, arriving dead in their parent’s arms. Some parents didn’t live long after; a rope, a knife, cyanide missing from the bank, their eyes always empty. “Hey. I’m here to work.” The boy smiled wide, his canteen slapping his thigh, too long pants dragging in the dirt with the oversized shoes, “How’s your mom?” The man asked.

The boy’s eyes flashed with worry, he tried to cover with a smile, “Tired.”

He nodded his head, taking the boy by the shoulder over to a workbench covered in planks and nails. The boy hopped up on a stool and held a plank in place, the man smiled, “You just think yah know what I want eh?”...
