The boy widely smiled, two front teeth missing, “Yep.” The man grabbed a hammer and started to align the nails to pound them in. The project today was a watchtower to help the residence guess how many zombies may come during the night. They were lucky so far, only four deaths, but it was only a sign of how close to death they all were.

“It’s been about three days since yer mom came out.”

The boy didn’t look at him, “She’s just tired. Hasn’t slept good.” The boy’s face twisted with stress, even though he was trying not to turn his head towards the man. “I gotta go somewhere.”

Sliding off the stool, his shoes hit the dirt wood floor and the boy ran past the other workers, through the dusty paths, the man stared after him with concern, “I’ll check on em soon as I’m done here.”

The boy stopped short of the green tent, glancing side to side with suspicious eyes, nobody, nothing, zilch, not even the wind blew. “Mommie.” He whispered, opening the flap, it was dark inside, but he saw the outline of his mother huddled near the back, “Are you feeling better?” She moved back and forth in a whole body nod. He slid in, the flap let a sliver of sun in, his saw his mother’s hand was red and puffy. Walking on his knees, he saw the open canteen, “Oh good,” picking it up, “you drank…”

A low growl made the plastic tent shake, “Mommie?” He clutched the canteen, eyes wide with fear; slowly he stepped back on his knees.

Her moans became louder, higher, rougher, he swallowed and she turned around, the streak of sun cutting across her body. Her dirty hair clumped up in bunches, yellow patches bulged around her face, her eyes were bloodshot, she gritted her thin yellow teeth, her son’s mouth opened, she growled like a dog swollen hands swiping for him. He knew the zombies melted at the contact of water, he held the open canteen, unsure, he looked to his mother; the yellow bulges broke open, puss and blood gushed out, he felt a surge of acid tickle his throat. She lunged at him; knocking straight into the canteen, water dumped into the new open wounds, she couldn’t scream, her throat was melting away...
