When I was a child, like any other, I was terrified of the boogeyman. I dreamt of his cold, lifeless hands reaching for my warm, sleeping body. His eyes stared out at me from the dark corners of the night, my imagination filling the shadows with horror. I would wake up screaming bloody murder in the middle of the night, only to find myself very much alone.

My grandfather was a minister, and he placed all of his faith in the Church. One night, he heard the startled gasps that marked my release from the clutches of a nightmare and he came to console me. He explained to me that my dreams of evil were merely the Devil trying to frighten me, and that all I had to do to conquer this evil was to pray for strength and safety. That night we prayed together, and trusting my grandfather's wisdom, I never had that dream again.

Oh, now though, now my dreams are of being safe and sound in my bed as a child. When I wake, I am affronted with the bloated, decomposition smell of the ghouls surrounding the town. I hear the scratching and pounding of the Horde mindlessly working away at our barricades in the night. I can again imagine the fingers of the dead grasping at my helpless flesh.

You see, my grandfather was wrong. Those dreams weren't demonic. They were a warning, a warning that none of us paid any mind. And this time...

...prayer will do nothing to save us.
