Found

• In the World Beyond. When a Citizen dies, they immediately generate a Lost Soul, which will appear in a random^ location. If a Lost Soul is not retrieved, it will eventually transform in to a Tortured Soul during a nightly Attack. It is possible for Lost Souls to generate in the same location, so therefore Tortured Souls can also be found in the same location.
  • A Lost Soul may still transform in to a Tortured Soul when in a Citizen's Inventory, in their Personal Chest, or in The Bank.
• There is no way for the Shaman to tell the difference between Lost and Tortured Souls when looking at the in-game Map

Uses

• Purify it in Town to remove respective penalties, and garner Defence for the Town.
  • The Soul Purifying Source construction is needed to do so.
    • Purifying each Tortured (and Lost) Soul provides the Town with 5 Defence, or 10 Defence if Soul Purifying Source is Upgraded to Levels 1-2, or 20 Defence if it is Upgraded to Level 3. These values are not retroactive.
• Increases the nightly Attack by 4% per Tortured Soul, or 2% if Soul Purifying Source has been Upgraded to Level 2. This penalty is capped at 20% if the Soul Purifying Source is not Upgraded. It is unknown if there is a cap when the Soul Purifying Source is at Levels 2-3.
  • To pick up a Tortured Soul in the World Beyond, you need to be either the Shaman, or be protected by a Mystic Potion.
    • Picking up a Tortured Soul in the World Beyond without being either the Shaman, or protected by a Mystic Potion, will kill you.
    • An Escort can action an escortee to pick up a Tortured Soul. If the escortee isn't the Shaman, or isn't Protected by a Mystic Potion, the escortee will mwahahaha be killed instantly
    • All Citizen's can freely touch Tortured Souls when in Town.
• Only the Shaman can hold more than one Tortured Soul in their Inventory at a time.

• Picking up a Tortured Soul in the World Beyond without being the Shaman, or protected by a Mystic Potion, will result in instant death : Possessed by a tortured soul.

^ Soul location is not completely random. There are minimum and maximum KM distances within which a Lost Soul will be generated. The distances are affected by both the day #, construction of the Hammam, and Town type.
